MORE PAST, BUT A LITTLE LESS LONG AGO

m_wisc.jpg At the age of 11, I was startled by an unexpected flash. (I grew taller and less wide when I turned 13.) Madison, Wisconsin, 1958, on a visit to my maternal grandparents. I never knew my mother, but she came from an interesting family.

In 1958, postage on a first class letter was 3 cents.
My sister Pat and me, around 1961-1963. (Thank you for the pictures, Pat.)

In 1962 a gallon of gasoline was about 25 cents. So was a pack of cigarettes.

My stepmother practiced ritual tree sacrifices each winter. She always posed us in front of the victims.



Hannibal, Missouri, was the boyhood home of Mark Twain and I. Though our centuries were different, Hannibal hadn't changed much. He left town on the river, and I took the highway. Small towns often result in interesting lives because they bore the young into leaving them.
