SMOKERS AND NONSMOKERS AGAINST TOBACCO REPRESSION

FOR LIMITED PERIODS OF TIME AMERICANS WILL ACCEPT REPRESSION IF THEY ARE CONVINCED IT SERVES A GREATER GOOD.
RATIONING,INVOLUNTARY SERVITUDE, AND LIMITS ON FREEDOM OF SPEECH ARE TOLERATED DURING WAR.
PROHIBITIONISTS PROMISED A UTOPIAN SOCIETY, AND IT TOOK YEARS OF BLATANT PROOF THEY WERE WRONG BEFORE FREEDOM WAS RESTORED TO DRINKERS.
POLITICAL FREEDOM WAS SEVERELY CURTAILED BY ANTI-COMMUNIST WITCH- HUNTERS WHEN POLITICIANS CONVINCED THE PUBLIC TO FEAR COMMUNISM.
FOR YEARS FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION HAS BEEN DENIED TO TOBACCO COMPANIES, WHILE ALL OTHER BUSINESSES, EVEN LAWYERS, ARE ALLOWED TO ADVERTISE ON ANY MEDIA THEY CHOOSE. NOW THE RIGHTS OF SMOKERS ARE BEING ABRIDGED IN PLACES WHERE THERE IS NO ACTUAL REASON FOR BANNING SMOKING. THOUGH TOBACCO HAS BEEN HEAVILY TAXED FOR YEARS, NOW EXTREMELY HIGH TAXES HAVE BEEN ADDED, AND EVEN MORE ARE PLANNED. THE PURPOSE IS TO MAKE SMOKING TOO EXPENSIVE FOR THE AVERAGE PERSON.
THE POINT OF THESE EXAMPLES IS NOT WHETHER EXTREME MEASURES ARE NECESSARY DURING WAR, WHETHER ALCOHOL IS GOOD FOR YOU, OR WHETHER COMMUNISM IS OR WAS AN ACTUAL THREAT.
IT IS THAT WHEN ENOUGH OFFICIAL PROPAGANDA IS HURLED AT THE PUBLIC MIND, OPPOSING IDEAS STAND LITTLE CHANCE...EVEN WHEN THOSE OPPOSING IDEAS ARE THE AMERICAN BILL OF RIGHTS.
WE ARE LIVING IN ANOTHER ERA OF PROPAGANDA AND REPRESSION, AND ONCE AGAIN AMERICANS ARE SUBMITTING LIKE SHEEP TO THE CONSTANT BARRAGE OF RHETORIC AND TO THE REPRESSIVE LAWS AND EXTREME TAXATION.

NOW, THE PRECEDENT OF DENYING TOBACCO COMPANIES THE RIGHT TO ADVERTISE ON BROADCAST MEDIA IS BEING USED AGAINST OTHERS, AS WELL. THOSE IN FAVOR OF CHANGING LAWS ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES ARE BEING DENIED THE RIGHT TO PURCHASE ADVERTISMENTS ON PUBLIC TRANSIT BUSES.
NOTE THAT THE ADS DID NOT ADVOCATE USE OF ANYTHING; THEY ADVOCATED CHANGING THE LAW. POLITICAL EXPRESSION IS BEING DENIED BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT AGREE!
THE FREEDOM OF ONE IS CONNECTED TO THE FREEDOM OF ALL. SMOKERS AND NONSMOKERS SHOULD UNITE TO PROTECT THE LIBERTY ALL AMERICANS SHOULD ENJOY.

i am not a representative of a tobacco company

whenever repressive anti-tobacco legislation is defeated, the tobacco company lobbies
and advertising campaigns are "blamed"
i am a smoker, but more importantly, i am an american who believes in freedom.
that freedom must be extended to all, even those of whom we don't approve,
if it is to remain a viable principle of american politics.

even if you don't smoke
it should anger you that americans have been propogandized
and manipulated into allowing the freedom of smokers to be attacked and
impaired.

WHY HAVEN'T SMOKERS ORGANIZED?
after all, if we aren't an actual majority, we are a large enough minority
to be heard quite loudly by legislators and other public servants.
as a group we tend to have too many other things to do. we work more, socialize
more, and have more responsibilities than non-smokers...
also, when faced with annoyances, we're more likely to just walk away, have a cigarette,
and go on to something else.
it's time to speak up!
whether you smoke or not, or care about smoking rights or not, ask yourself,
WHICH OF OUR RIGHTS WILL BE EXTINGUISHED NEXT?
