TECHNOLOGY FOR ALL

the captain invents, and presents free ideas

In the tradition of Leonardo da Vinci, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Robert Heinlin,
here are some free ideas, and some useful information and opinions on other people's ideas.

Science and philosophy should not be separated. Technology is often the means to ideals conceived by philosophers, and scientific discoveries often contribute to the world of ideas. Expand your brain to encompass both.

As mankind advances in new technology, it is important to remember that old technology can be used in useful, creative and interesting ways that put us in control of our environment and make us more independant

Connector designers need to think of users!
Who was the idiot who designed USB ports so you can never tell which way the plug goes without trying it both ways?
That isn't the only poorly-designed plug and port, of course. Before that was the 110-volt AC wide and narrow prong. You can look at those if there's light to see, but it's AC, after all, and which prong is which doesn't matter most of the time.
Then there's the mini-USB in multiple incompatible sizes. Many of those only insert one way, too.
Finally, newer phones have an either-way feature, but they also easily wear out or get dirty, leaving the phone to complain about it. Someone needs to standardise connectors and make them less flimsy.

Want to know what your character is worth? JUST ASCII !
Every character has its numerical code. It's handy to know when programming, reading files in a hex editor, or when a key breaks. If your B won't be, just hold down ALT and enter 66 on the number-pad (with num-lock on of course). When you let up ALT, you should have a B. If you wanted a b, not a B, make it 98, which is 66+32. Have fun.
Input one character:

ASCII Decimal Output
ASCII Hex Output
ASCII Binary Output

Texting by phone is a handy way to communicate. There are browser apps you can use to message from your computer or tablet, so you don't have to type on the tiny phone screen. One called MySMS works reasonably well for that, but I discovered an independent system called TELEGRAM. There's an app for your phone, your tablet, and your computer desktop (Windows, Apple, or Linux). It works better than plain phone-texting, though both parties need to have it installed. It can also be used to send files betweens phones and computers, your own or someone else's. It's free to download and use.
Telegram is also known for its extended group-chat functions, often used to stay private from government surveilance, but I don't need that. It's great for one-on-one messages, with a fun variety of animated gifs you can add.

Internet Speedometer
Check your connection speed. Your mileage may vary.

Access your MODEM:
Cable modems are usually at 192.168.100.1. DSL may be 192.168.0.100. Some companies might differ. Those addresses should get you a status/diagnostic internal web page. If your internet quits, those might (or might not) tell you why. My Cox Cable connection frequently went down for no apparent reason, and Cox was both unhelpful and overpriced. I switched to a home 5G provider, and after some initial glitches, it's more dependable, faster, and cheaper.

Ubuntu:
An excellent, easy to install, and free Linux Operating System. It's the one I use. There are a variety of flavors-- different desktop styles, some better for older computers, and others with more advanced features, but all quite easy to download, install, and use, at no cost. There are hundred of free programs available to do anything you could do on MS or Apple. If you have drive space, you can install it alongside your other OS, and choose which to boot each time. I find that I never want to boot Windows instead of Linux, though. Linux is much more secure against virus or intrusion.

If you're still using Microsoft Windows, you'll need one of the following:

THE PHYSICAL WORLD

THE COSMIC APPROACH

The home environment is made up of a few major items and thousands of seemingly insignificant things, any one of which can become an irritation if it is in an unknown place when you want it, in the way when you don't need it, or if it does not live up to its full potential when you use it. Many people are generally aware of this, but do not employ the effort and imagination to improve the situation.

Storage in drawers or boxes, especially if items will be piled on top of one another, is best only for things that have no current use. They should not be discarded, because they may have some use in the future, but may be kept out of sight till then.

Items that are often used and need to be in sight often take up all the available horizontal space. Sometimes such spaces are needed for other things, such as writing, eating, sitting, and sleeping. There is a better way to keep useful items in sight and off the floor. Keep them in suspense.

No, I don't mean to read them a mystery story. You need lengths of rope, wire, or strong cord strung horizontally overhead between walls. Then vertical strings can be used to suspend the useful items. Pens, lighters, scissors; whatever you need will be there, using only previously wasted airpace to reside while idle.
